Swiss BTC holders prepare for referendum

Several Swiss Bitcoin users are renewing their attempts to persuade the Swiss National Bank to keep Bitcoin (BTC) in its reserves by holding a referendum on changing the country's constitution - but first they will have to convince more than 100,000 residents to sign a petition.
Adding Bitcoin to the central bank's reserves would help protect the country's "sovereignty and neutrality" in an increasingly uncertain world, said Yves Bennaïm, founder and president of 2B4CH, the non-profit think tank leading the charge.
"We are in the process of finalizing the committee's organizational preparations and preparing the documents to be submitted to the State Chancellery to start the process," Bennaïm told the Swiss news service Neue Zürcher Zeitung (NZZ) on April 20.
However, for a referendum to take place on issues submitted by Swiss citizens or groups, 100,000 signatures of Swiss citizens are needed within 18 months - a threshold that got in the way when 2B4CH made its first attempt in October 2021.
Around this time, 2B4CH first launched the "Bitcoin Initiative," stating that its mission was to add Bitcoin as a reserve currency to Article 99-3 of the Swiss Federal Constitution.
Switzerland has a population of 8.77 million, which means that about 1.15% of the population will need to sign the petition.
